Carrollton Man Wins $667,142 In Record Powerball Drawing

Story Photo video icon A 38-year-old Carrollton man got a jump start on saving for his children’s college educations when the Powerball ticket he purchased for the record $365 million Feb. 18 Powerball drawing turned out to be worth $667,142. Kendall Gladbach said he and his wife, Tamra, plan to use their windfall to get out of debt and put the rest away for their children’s education. They have seven children between them.

"We’re still in shock," Gladbach said when he claimed his winnings Feb. 21.

Gladbach purchased his lucky ticket at Break Time, Highway 65 North in Carrollton.

Gladbach, who works in maintenance at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, said he had won $7 from the previous Powerball drawing, and he used those winnings to purchase additional tickets for the Feb. 18 drawing. It was one of those plays that matched the five white-ball numbers to win the game’s second-level prize. He let the computer select the winning numbers. They were: 15, 17, 43, 44 and 48.

"We knew we won something, but we didn’t know how much until after we checked the Internet Sunday morning," Gladbach said. "I took it to Break Time and found out it was worth a lot more."

Gladbach said he took the ticket home and told Tamra, "We didn’t win $200,000. She said she thought it was wrong, and then I told her that we won $667,000! She didn’t believe me."

Due to the record jackpot of $365 million on Feb. 18, the Match 5 Bonus Prize was added to the second-level prize amount. The Match 5 Bonus Prize caps record jackpots to pay additional prize money to second-level prize winners. The Feb. 18 jackpot was the second time the bonus feature has been activated. The first activation was Oct. 19, 2005.

In addition to Gladbach’s ticket, one other ticket matched all five white-ball numbers in the record drawing to win the $667,142 prize. The second prize was claimed by a Lake St. Louis woman.
