Chaffee Man Wins $50,000 Tax-Paid Prize By Using Wife's Numbers

Story Photo A 45-year-old Chaffee husband can be thankful he used his wife’s lucky numbers after they matched all five numbers drawn in the Feb. 1 SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing to win $50,000 tax paid.* Rodney "Rod" Austin, 45, said he has been playing her numbers for a year or so. Those numbers are: 19, 21, 24, 28 and 29. "I’m going to pay off my mortgage," said Austin. "That’s what I always said I would do, so I am going to stick by it." Austin, who is a manager at Havco Wood Products in Scott City, said his wife, Shari, selected the winning numbers at random years ago. Austin purchased his winning SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket at Chaffee One Stop, 304 N. Main in Chaffee. To date, 100 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since it began Nov. 6, 2000. A total of 814 players won a $25,000 tax-paid prize in the previous SHOW ME 5 game, which ran from Nov. 6, 1994, to Nov. 5, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
