ILLINOIS MAN PICKS UP $25,000
A truck driver for a mail carrier picked up $25,000 tax-paid* after matching all five numbers drawn Friday night in the Missouri Lottery’s SHOW ME 5 game. Laverne Hemker, 53, of Bartelso, Ill., plans to use the prize money to buy an airline ticket for his girlfriend in the Phillipines, so she can move to the United States. They plan to marry early next year.
Hemker, who also farms, purchased his winning ticket on Oct. 2 at Westmoreland’s Food Mart, 6020 N. Broadway in St. Louis. The five winning numbers - 3, 8, 18, 25 and 26 - are birthdays of five of his six children.
Since the game began in 1994, 788 tickets worth $25,000 tax paid have been sold.
* Twenty-eight percent federal and 4 percent state taxes are withheld from the total prize amount of $36,764.70 to provide $25,000 cash at the time of redemption. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may receive a refund.
