St. Joseph Woman Wins Second Large Prize With Lucky Numbers

Story Photo A 69-year-old retired hairdresser from St. Joseph used one set of five numbers to win two large prizes playing the Missouri Lottery. Barbara "Barb" James said she bought just one ticket for the Jan. 7 SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing using some numbers she had won $25,000 tax paid with eight years ago, and she matched all five numbers to win $50,000 tax paid.* In 1998, James used Quick Pick to select the lucky numbers ? 9, 10, 17, 29 and 30 ? in the Lottery’s prior SHOW ME 5 game and won $25,000 tax paid. She has continued to play those same numbers in the newer SHOW ME 5 Paydown game. "The last time I won I gave some of the money to my church and my children," James said. "This time I will save some of the money and maybe take a trip." James said she bought her recent winning ticket on the way home from a friend’s 50th wedding anniversary party. She purchased it at Imperial Super Gas, 811 S. 6th St. in St. Joseph. To date, 96 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began Nov. 6, 2000. A total of 814 players won a $25,000 tax-paid prize in the previous SHOW ME 5 game, which ran from Nov. 6, 1994, to Nov. 5, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
