Record Powerball Jackpot Contributes to Record Lottery Transfer to Education
The Missouri Lottery today transferred a record $26.5 million to the Lottery Proceeds Fund for public education. Today’s transfer surpasses the prior record of $25.2 million set on Jan. 16, 2004. The November transfer of $26,566,105 is based on record October ticket sales, and brings the total transferred for the fiscal year to more than $97.8 million.
"October was a huge month in sales," said Larry Jansen, executive director for the Missouri Lottery. "We had a record Powerball jackpot of $340 million and a new $10 Scratchers game, ’$100 Million Cash Spectacular,’ that really had a large impact on our sales."
October also proved to be a record sales month. Sales during the month were $88,469,456. The previous sales record was $80.7 million set in December of 2003.
Since the introduction of "$100 Million Cash Spectacular" in September, sales of the $10 Scratchers tickets grew from an average of $500,000 per week to more than $2 million per week.
Powerball also was revised in August to help create larger and faster growing jackpots. Prior to the $340 million jackpot, the previous Powerball jackpot record was $314 million.
To date, the Missouri Lottery has generated more than $2.5 billion in proceeds for the state, including education, since ticket sales began in January 1986.
Approximately 27.3 cents of every dollar spent playing the Lottery goes to public education programs in Missouri. The Missouri Lottery’s contribution to public education is about 3.8 percent of education’s total annual funding. Each year, the Legislature appropriates Lottery proceeds to various education programs. For a list of programs funded, visit the Lottery’s Web site at www.molottery.com.
