'Powerball Hopefuls' Recognized As Lottery Team Of The Month

Congratulations to the "Powerball Hopefuls" of Jefferson City! Their group was recognized as the Lottery Team of the Month for September as part of the Missouri Lottery’s 2005 Lottery Captains’ promotion. The promotion awards a Lottery players’ group with prizes and a feature at Molottery.com each month during the calendar year.
The "Powerball Hopefuls" are a group of 13 friends who all work at the Missouri Highway Patrol’s Criminal Records and Identification Division. The members, who are all from Jefferson City, are: Janell Bernskoetter, Helen Boeckmann, Kim Clarkston, Connie Daniels, Julie Duncan, Becky Kliethermes, Justin Lacy, Dianna Neier, Carol Otto, Linda Rademann, Shirley Talken, April Watkins and Valerie Watkins.
The group has been playing Powerball since it started in 1992. In addition to Powerball, they also play Missouri Lotto.
Shirley Talken, the group’s captain, said they each contribute $5 monthly, and Valerie Watkins uses that money to buy both Powerball and Lotto tickets for each of the Wednesday and Saturday drawings. Watkins buys tickets at various locations and uses Quick Pick to select the winning numbers.
According to Talken, each member of the group has a different dream of what they would do with a large prize if they won.
"Some (people) will travel, some will put it in the bank and some even say they’d keep working," she said. "I’m traveling."
