The Marsh Martians are a group of 25 co-workers who work together at Marsh Shipping Supply Company in Owensville. They manufacture shipping and carton-sealing equipment such as tape dispensers, markers and stencil machines.
The group has been pooling their money to play twice a week for the past seven to 10 years. "We each put in $2 a week and buy our tickets on Wednesdays and Saturdays," said the group’s Lottery Captain Sharon Brown.
Brown said she usually buys the group’s tickets at Break Time Convenience, 702 W. Highway 28 in Owensville. "We play Powerball, Lotto, SHOW ME 5 Paydown and Pick 3 each week," said Brown. "I let the computer pick our numbers, except on Pick 3. For that game, I have the group members give me their favorite numbers, and I take turns playing them throughout the year."
Brown keeps track of the group’s winnings and has one rule for group members: "You have to play all year long to be in the group.
"We start collecting money and playing in January, and at the end of the year, I divide up all of our winnings and pay them out to each member in the group."
The group has won some significant prizes throughout the years, including a $1,175 Lotto prize, but there is something more that keeps this group of employees playing together.
"It’s the fear that you’ll be left out if the group wins," said team member Jamie Gross. "I don’t want to be one of the few still working."
