Retired Columbia Firefighter Uncovers $1,000

Story Photo A retired Columbia firefighter was fired up after buying a couple of Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets and winning $1,000. Robert "Bob" Elder, 73, said he bought the winning "Dream Stakes" ticket on Oct. 30 when he was buying groceries at Hy-Vee, 3100 W. Broadway in Columbia. Elder said his wife, Lorna Ann, celebrated her birthday just days before his win. "Her birthday was Monday, so I’m going to give her the whole check," he said. "We’ll also take a vacation to California in December to see our son." Elder retired from the Columbia Fire Department 18 years ago, and he then worked as the head custodian at Oakland Junior High School for a few years. He now is a self-employed custodian. "Dream Stakes," a $2 game, officially went on sale April 24.
