Newlyweds From Ava Win $3.1 Million Lotto Jackpot
Less than two months after getting married, an Ava couple now has 3.1 million reasons to experience wedded bliss after winning the Sept. 18 Missouri Lotto jackpot. Perry and Eula Lakey said they didn’t take a honeymoon, and they probably still won’t now that their financial situation has changed.
"We have no idea what we’ll do (with the prize money)," said Eula Lakey. ""Perry wants a new boat, but other than that, we don’t know. You always buy tickets hoping to win, but now that we have, we wonder ’now what are we going to do?’"
Eula Lakey, 57, who works as a custodian for Ava’s high school, said for now, she and Perry both plan to keep working. Perry Lakey, 61, drives a concrete mixing truck. Each has two grown children from previous marriages.
Perry Lakey purchased the winning ticket at Ava Mini Mart, 710 N. Jefferson in Ava. He let the computer select the winning numbers. Those numbers were: 5, 14, 16, 18, 30 and 44.
The Lakeys said they plan to take the prize money in 25 annual payments, which means they will receive approximately $124,000 a year before taxes. The Lottery will withhold 25 percent federal and 4 percent state taxes, and the couple will receive approximately $88,040 per year after taxes.
In addition to the Lakeys’ win, the Ava Mini Mart will receive a bonus equal to 1 percent of the jackpot - $31,000 ? for selling the winning Lotto ticket.
To date, 195 jackpot tickets worth $1 million or more have been sold since the Missouri Lottery began 18 years ago. Of those tickets sold, 146 were from the Lotto game.
