Montgomery City Grandma Wins $50,000 Tax Paid

Story Photo Being a nice grandma paid off for a Montgomery City woman when she stopped to get her two granddaughters a soda, bought some Missouri Lottery SHOW ME 5 Paydown tickets and ended up winning $50,000 tax paid.* Charlene Staten, 59, said she picked up her granddaughters from volleyball and cheerleading practice on Aug. 30, and on the way home, they stopped at Brad’s Kwik Store in Montgomery City, to buy a couple of sodas. Though she usually buys SHOW ME 5 Paydown tickets on Wednesdays and Saturdays, this time she decided to buy a couple of tickets on a Monday evening. One of her Quick Pick tickets - with the numbers 8, 16, 19, 34 and 40 - ended up matching all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid. "We’ll probably get a swimming pool for our granddaughters," said Staten. "We have seven granddaughters ranging in age from 4 to 19." Other than the pool, Staten said she and her husband, George, haven’t decided what they will do with the prize money, but they have a "long list" of things they can chose from. To date, 80 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began Nov. 6, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
