First-Time Powerball Player Wins $150,000

As the Powerball jackpot climbed ever higher in March, new players across the country decided to try their luck on the Draw Game. Among them was first-time Powerball player Laura Ford of Imperial, who won a $50,000 prize by matching four white-ball numbers plus the Powerball number on March 27. Because Ford paid an extra dollar for Power Play on her ticket, her prize was multiplied by the Power Play number drawn, 3, for a total prize of $150,000.

“I just kind of did it on a whim,” she explained.

She purchased her ticket from Wallis Petroleum, 1727 Catlin Drive, in Barnhart. The night of the drawing, a friend reminded Ford to check and see if she had won.

“My friend said she’d bought a Powerball ticket and needed to check it,” Ford said. “I said, ‘Oh, I’ve got one in my wallet. I need to check mine, too.’”

Although she had not played Powerball before, the fact that she had matched all but one white-ball number was an obvious sign that she had won something. When she found out what that prize was, she said it was difficult to believe.

“I thought, ‘This is a joke! This can’t be serious,’” she said with a laugh.
The winning numbers for the March 27 Powerball drawing were 16, 20, 37, 44, 62, and the Powerball was 12.

Powerball is a multi-state Draw Game that is drawn on Wednesdays and Saturdays and costs $2 per play. Powerball jackpots start at $40 million and grow until they are won.
