Concordia Man Wins $90,000 More Than He'd Thought on Scratchers Ticket

A Concordia man knew he had won a sizeable prize on the Missouri Lottery’s newest Scratchers ticket, “Triple Bonus Crossword,” but a small oversight caused him to initially underestimate his prize by $90,000.

Herbert Bryson bought his winning ticket less than two weeks after the ticket became available. Rather than scratch his letters as he plays, Bryson said he circles them with a pen. After thinking he had finished marking his letters, he counted nine matched words — though he had actually matched ten. In a game where prize amounts increase with the number of words matched, it was an important difference.

“I knew that I won $10,000, but I had missed a word,” Bryson explained. “I checked it at a machine and it said $100,000. I said, ‘That’s even better!’”
Bryson purchased his winning ticket at Crown Center Apothecary, 2450 Grand Boulevard, in Kansas City.

Introduced on Feb. 26, “Triple Bonus Crossword” is a $5 Scratchers ticket. Bryson claimed one of five $100,000 top prizes available in the game. Remaining prize amounts for all Scratchers games can be found at MOLottery.com and on the official Missouri Lottery app.
