Smithville Man's $50,000 Win Leads to Fun Purchase

Story Photo

Kenneth Vanderpool likes to buy Powerball tickets before each Wednesday and Saturday drawing. He uses a combination of his own numbers from important life dates and Quick Pick numbers. It was anything but routine, however, when he checked his tickets and the message, “Claim at Lottery office” displayed across the screen.

“I waited for the store to clear out and asked the clerk what I won. He said, ‘$50,000’ and shook my hand. I said, ‘Holy, moly!’ Well, holy moly wasn’t the exact word I used,” laughed the Smithville man.

As the excitement set in, Vanderpool wanted to share the news with his wife but also remembered something he had his eye on – a used pontoon boat.

“I told my wife I found a pontoon boat I wanted to buy and she said, ‘We can’t afford that.’ Then I told her I won $50,000 today and showed her the ticket,” he explained. “She said ok, but the rest would go to bills, and our daughter is getting married this spring.”

Vanderpool purchased his winning ticket at Kum and Go, 1102 S. 169 Highway, in Smithville. His Powerball ticket matched four white-ball numbers and the Powerball number in the drawing on Feb. 23. The winning numbers were:  4, 6, 14, 20, 32 and the Powerball number was 13.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m.
