Illinois Retiree Wins $50,000 in Missouri

Story Photo Buying a soda in Missouri paid off for a Dupo, Ill., man who also bought a Missouri Lottery SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket and ended up winning $50,000 tax paid.* Lawrence "Larry" Baker, 55, stopped in Jennings Convenience Center, 9311 Lewis & Clark in Jennings, for a soda when he bought a $1 SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket for the July 22 drawing. It turned out to be worth the game’s top prize. "I’ll put it in the bank," he said. Baker, who is retired from the mental health field, said he let the computer select his winning numbers. They were: 1, 18, 37, 38 and 44. To date, 78 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began Nov. 6, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
