Sleep Technician Wakes Up To $50,000 Prize on 50th Birthday

Story Photo A sleep technician was wide awake on his 50th birthday--June 20--when he discovered his Missouri Lottery SHOW ME 5 Paydown ticket was worth $50,000 tax paid.* William "Bill" Rivers, 50, of Fayetteville, Ark., said he went to Hilltop Tobacco Store in Pineville on June 18 to buy some Missouri Lotto tickets. While there, he decided to buy some SHOW ME 5 Paydown tickets, too. On June 20, the day after the drawing, he checked his tickets and found out that one of them was worth $50,000 tax paid. "I’ll probably take my family on a trip before school (starts)," he said. "We’ll probably go to Florida." Rivers said he also plans to save some of the prize money for retirement. The five winning numbers on Rivers’ ticket were: 12, 14, 23, 25 and 31. He let the computer generate his winning combination. Rivers, who runs a sleep disorders center in Fayetteville, Ark., and his wife, Carolyn, are the parents of two children, ages 14 and 23. To date, 77 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began Nov. 6, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on its value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
