TENNESSEE MAN GETS BOOST TO RETIREMENT FUND

A firefighter from Dyersburg, Tenn., can add $25,000 tax paid* to his retirement fund after matching all five numbers in the Missouri Lottery’s SHOW ME 5 game on Jan. 24. Vernon Barnhill, 64, said along with using his winnings for retirement, he will also give some to his wife so she can go "flea marketing shopping." Barnhill purchased his winning ticket at the Double Nickel Truckstop, Highway 412 East in Hayti, when he stopped for gas. He let the computer pick the winning combination: 2, 7, 22, 23 and 30. To date, 701 SHOW ME 5 players have won $25,000 tax paid since that game began in November 1994. * Twenty-eight percent federal and 4 percent state taxes are withheld from the total prize amount of $36,764.70 to provide $25,000 cash at the time of redemption. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may receive a refund.
