Monroe City Dad Wins $300,000 Prize On First $10 Ticket

Story Photo A Monroe City dad plans to take care of his five grown kids after he uncovered a $300,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery "$300,000 Club Casino" ticket. Danny "D.J" Henning, 63, said he only bought one $10 ticket on May 4, when he stopped in Monroe City Amoco to see his daughter, Christine, who works there. It was also the first time he had ever bought a $10 Scratchers ticket. Henning said two of his daughters work at the Amoco, and they have been telling him that he "needs to shop there." After he bought the one $10 ticket on Tuesday, he took it home to scratch off the latex. When he realized the prize was $300,000, he thought it was a joke. "I turned it (ticket) over," he said. "I thought it might be one of those joke tickets, and my daughter was messing with me." Henning and his wife, Patricia "Pat," are the parents of five grown children. They also have 13 grandchildren. In addition to helping his children, he also plans to buy himself something and maybe take his wife "out to dinner for lobster" to celebrate their 16th wedding anniversary on May 7. "I might get a used pick-up," he said when he claimed his prize in Jefferson City on May 5. Henning is employed with Dura Automotive in Hannibal. He is also a retired Army veteran and former police officer. "$300,000 Club Casino," a $10 Scratchers game, officially went on sale Dec. 24, 2003.
