Affton Man Uncovers $100,000 Holiday Surprise

Story Photo

When Daniel Bates left his Affton home on Dec. 21 to purchase a gift for a family member, he did not know that he would shortly be returning home—to tell his wife and grandson that he had uncovered a $100,000 top prize on a Missouri Lottery “NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION™” holiday ticket.

Bates bought the winning ticket at Wallis Petroleum, located at 9765 Mackenzie Road in Affton, a convenience store that Bates frequents. He stopped in on Dec. 21 to redeem a few winning tickets he had and decided to give the “NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION™” ticket a shot.

Although he usually does not scratch his tickets while still in the store, Bates said he did on that day. As he scratched, he began to realize he had a big winner in his hands.

“I was scratching and thought, ‘Wait a minute, now…This is a joke, right?’” he said.

The $100,000 prize that Bates revealed was not a joke, however, as confirmed by the clerk at the counter. Bates then returned home and told his wife and grandson the exciting news. He said the pleasant holiday surprise will partially go toward home maintenance, with the rest being saved.

“NATIONAL LAMPOON’S CHRISTMAS VACATION™” is a $5 Scratchers ticket that started on Oct. 15, 2018. Bates claimed the third of five $100,000 top prizes available in the game. Remaining prize amounts for all Scratchers games can be found at MOLottery.com and on the official Missouri Lottery app.
