Lottery Win Answers St. Louis Resident's Burning Questions

“I’ve always wondered what the machine would say if I won it big,” said Medford “Skip” Polete, referring to the Lottery’s self-service Check-A-Ticket devices. “Now I know. It says ‘Claim at Lottery.’”

Polete’s answer would come on the heels of a $139,000 Show Me Cash jackpot win. The St. Louis resident claimed his prize on Nov. 19, though he was initially unsure about the message’s meaning.

“I scanned the rest of my tickets and took this one to the clerk to have him look at it,” said Polete. “He scanned the ticket and leaned in real close and whispered, ‘Do you know how much this is? It’s $139,000.’”

The realization of his win did not immediately set in for Polete or his wife, Ellen.

“She was out of town visiting one of our children and grandkids. I called her, and she didn’t believe me. I had to text her a photo of the front and back of the ticket, and she looked up the winning numbers,” laughed Polete.

The couple plans to devote the bulk of their prize to their savings account with the intention of methodically planning out future expenses.

“We will pay bills first, but we will save the rest of it. We might take our grandkids to Florida for the spring break vacation next year,” said Polete.

The winning Show Me Cash ticket was purchased at On the Run, 1111 Main Street, in Imperial. Polete matched all five numbers in the Nov. 14 drawing using Quick Pick. Those winning numbers were:  7, 15, 16, 30 and 34.
Show Me Cash is a daily in-state Draw Game with jackpots starting at $50,000. Polete’s $139,000 jackpot marks the 534th jackpot won since sales for the Draw Game began in 2008. All Lottery retail locations are outfitted with self-service Check-A-Ticket machines allowing players to scan their tickets to check for winners. Players can also check their tickets on the official Missouri Lottery app.
