St. Peters' Woman Gets Tax-Paid "Refund"

Story Photo A 38-year-old St. Peters’ woman had her "joke" come true when she matched all five numbers in the Feb. 21 SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing to win $50,000* tax paid. Lisa Portell-DeBold said she teased her tax preparer earlier in the day that she would "hit the SHOW ME 5 Paydown drawing tonight." She called him the next day to tell him the good news. "This (win) is going to help so much," she said. "It’s going to make it more comfortable." Portell-DeBold, said she plans to use the prize money to pay for repairs on her home, debt on credit cards, college loans for her 18-year-old who is in college, and start a college fund for their 2-year-old. Portell-DeBold purchased her winning ticket at QuikTrip, 3889 Mexico Road in St. Charles. She let the computer select the winning numbers. They were: 5, 13, 16, 42 and 44. To date, 70 players have matched all five numbers drawn to win $50,000 tax paid in SHOW ME 5 Paydown since the game began Nov. 6, 2000. * The Missouri Lottery will pay 25 percent federal and 4 percent state withholding taxes for the top prize based on it’s value. Depending on personal income, winners may owe additional taxes for the prize, or they may be entitled to a refund. Total value of the top prize is $70,422.55. After withholding, winners will receive $50,000. If more than 14 players match the five winning numbers in a single drawing, $1 million will be divided equally among the number of winning tickets.
