St. Louis Couple Win $1.6 Million Lotto Jackpot

Story Photo A St. Louis couple will start out 2004 a little more relaxed after winning the Jan. 24 Lotto jackpot worth $1.6 million. Martin "Smitty" and Charlotte Smith of St. Louis (63116*) said they plan to wipe out their credit-card debt and maybe take a little trip with their prize money. "We’ll definitely keep working," said Martin, when he claimed his prize on Monday. "We might make some home improvements. Our daughter is getting close to college, and now scholarships aren’t as necessary." Martin Smith, 43, said he purchased the couple’s ticket on Jan. 24 at Bellevue In & Out Market in Richmond Heights, on his way home from a part-time job. He didn’t check his $5 ticket until Sunday night, when he got on the computer and went to the Missouri Lottery’s Web site. First he saw that the first and last numbers in one combination matched; then he eyed the middle numbers and realized he matched all six numbers to win the jackpot. The winning numbers were: 16, 27, 33, 34, 37 and 40. In addition to the Smiths’ win, Bellevue In & Out Market will receive a bonus equal to 1 percent of the jackpot - $16,000 ? for selling the winning Lotto ticket. To date, 192 jackpot tickets worth $1 million or more have been sold since the Missouri Lottery began 17 years ago. Of those tickets sold, 143 were from the Lotto game. * winner’s zip code to help media determine coverage area
