MISSOURI LOTTERY SALES JUMP 21 PERCENT, SET NEW RECORD

Missouri Lottery sales in fiscal year 2003 broke all previous sales records by climbing 21 percent higher than the previous fiscal year’s sales.   The fiscal year ended on June 30, and total fiscal year sales were $710,016,551*.

"Despite significant budget cuts, we had a great year," said Jim Scroggins, executive director of the Missouri Lottery.  "Strong Scratchers and Powerball sales and a new Club Keno game helped the Lottery offset the cuts."

Scroggins said the fiscal year 2003 sales increase can be attributed to:  high Powerball jackpots, including a record Powerball jackpot of $314.9 million on Dec. 25, 2002; a larger variety of Scratchers games, including $10 Scratchers tickets; $42 million in sales from the new Club Keno game; and successful product promotions.

More than $435* million in prizes were awarded to Missouri Lottery players during the past fiscal year.  Eight Missouri Lottery players became millionaires, winning jackpots ranging from $1.4 million to $19.6 million.  In all, $40.5 million in jackpot prizes were awarded.

Fifty-seven Missouri Lottery Powerball tickets worth $100,000 were sold in Missouri, and 21 SHOW ME 5 Paydown tickets worth $50,000 tax paid were sold during fiscal year 2003.

In addition, record sales in fiscal year 2003 translated into record proceeds to Missouri’s public education programs.   During fiscal year 2003, the lottery topped the $2 billion proceeds mark when it transferred $193,940,550* to the Lottery Proceeds Fund to benefit various public education programs.

Scroggins said that while lottery proceeds continue to increase and are a significant source of income, the funds only make up approximately 3 percent of education’s total annual budget.

"In these tight times, every dollar counts," he said.
