Sunday Service and $50,000 Prize for Morgan County Resident

While he did not pray about winning the Missouri Lottery, Charles Stemberger of Syracuse did win a $50,000 Powerball prize while on his way to his church’s weekly Sunday service.

“I stopped in Break Time on my way to church to check my tickets, like I do every week,” said Stemberger. “The screen said something about taking the ticket to the Lottery, which I had never seen before.”

Perplexed, Stemberger had the manager of Break Time, 600 Highway 5 in Tipton, take a look at the ticket.

“She told me what it was worth, and that I had better sign the back and claim in Jefferson City,” said Stemberger.

The Syracuse resident matched four out of five white-ball numbers and the Powerball number to win a $50,000 prize for the May 26 Powerball drawing. Those numbers were 1, 21, 31, 45 and 49 with a Powerball of 21.

While claiming his prize on May 29, Stemberger said that the winning ticket was burning a hole in his pocket due to Lottery offices being closed on Memorial Day.

“I kept checking my wallet to make sure it was still there,” said Stemberger.

With the prize, Stemberger and his wife plan to pay off bills and make a donation to their church.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.
