Club Keno Win Helps West Alton Woman Repair Her Business

Susan Saale, the owner of West Alton Bar and Grill, purchased a few Club Keno tickets one afternoon before the dinner rush at the establishment on May 11. But when she scanned her tickets later that evening, she didn’t believe what she saw.

“I started screaming and shaking real bad,” said the West Alton resident. “The bartender on duty came over and held me up because I just couldn’t believe it. I was in shock.”

Saale said she scanned her tickets about 20 times before she realized she had won a total of $61,217. She played five 8-spot games and selected Bulls-Eye to increase her prize, which also included the Progressive Jackpot.

“The bar was packed when it happened, and people thought I was hurt at first,” recalled Saale. “The bartender told them, ‘She did good on her Keno ticket.’ Then everyone realized how much I’d won, and the whole bar started cheering and everything.”

Saale believes it happened at exactly the right time. She had been working double shifts, and the Thursday night before, she had four pieces of equipment go out at the bar. She felt defeated and told her husband she didn’t know if she could keep doing this.

“I was literally praying to God for strength to keep going,” said Saale, who said she has owned the bar for about three years.

Saale says her main goal is to use most of the money to repair the equipment. But she said some of it she hopes they can use on a vacation, or a nice dinner, or a new pair of shoes.

The West Alton Bar and Grill is located at 14005 N. State Route 94 in West Alton.

To play Club Keno, players can choose how many different numbers (also called “spots”) they want to play from 1 to 10. Twenty numbers from a field of one to 80 are chosen in a computerized random Club Keno drawing held every four minutes.
