Man Cleans Truck, Finds $50,000 Powerball Ticket

With a few extra dollars in his pocket, Jason Jacobs decided to buy three Powerball tickets using Quick Pick for the Jan. 24 drawing. He put the three tickets in his truck’s center console and there they stayed, until the morning of March 25, when he discovered he had won $50,000.

“I cleaned out my truck last week and pulled out the tickets from my console to check them,” the Independence resident said. “First thing I did was check how long the ticket was good for before it expired. I was afraid it had already expired for my chance to claim it. And then I realized I was still in the loop of not running out of time.”

Jacobs’ wife was with him when they were scanning their tickets at a local QuikTrip. Both were unsure what it meant when the reader displayed, “Claim at Lottery office.”

“So we took the ticket up to the register to have it checked, and the lady said, ‘Sir, you just won $50,000,’” said Jacobs. “My wife said, ‘Oh, my God, Jason! Oh, my God, Jason!’”

The excited couple has a nine-month-old daughter and plan to put most of it in the bank for her college fund. Then, they may use some to take a family vacation.

“Nothing crazy,” said Jacobs. “This is a bonus, a nice bonus.”

Jacobs purchased his winning Powerball ticket at Hy-Vee, 1525 E. 23rd St., in Independence.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.
