A Rolla cook who went to Kroger to buy dinner ended up serving himself a $100,000 Lottery windfall. Terry Southard said while buying items for dinner on Feb. 28, he also purchased one $20 Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket from the “$5,000,000 Big Money” game.

“I scratched it off in the store,” Southard said. “I had to check it (using the Lottery app on his smartphone) like three times. Then I called my wife; someone had to come pick me up. I was shaky, and my heart was pounding.”

Southard said he and his wife, Jessica, who is a waitress, plan to use the prize money to pay off some bills, spoil themselves a little and put the rest in the bank.

“We’ll go to the mall and buy some new clothes,” said Southard. He added that they may also get their two dogs some treats, too.

Southard bought the winning ticket at Kroger, 605 W. Fourth St., in Rolla.

$5,000,000 Big Money” is a $20 Scratchers ticket that began May 31, 2016. More than $41 million in prizes remain in the game, including two top prizes worth $5 million.

Remaining prizes for all Scratchers tickets can be viewed at MOLottery.com, as well as on the Lottery’s mobile app. Players can use the app on their mobile phones to scan most Missouri Lottery tickets to see if they are winners.
