Winning Ticket Was Fate

Groundhog Day is known for being a predictor of the winter weather season. For Patricia Hurt of St. Louis, all future Groundhog Days will have a slightly different vibe.

“The last two years have been very difficult for me and my family. I’ve had to rely on them a lot to help me through,” said Hurt, while fighting back tears. “This morning, my son gave me $30 in winning Scratchers tickets and said, ‘Go have some fun.’”

Heeding her son’s advice and generosity, Hurt purchased Missouri Lottery Scratchers tickets from Phillips 66, 4300 S. Kingshighway, in St. Louis.

“They didn’t have many $5 tickets, so I got some of the ‘$1,000 Frenzy’ tickets,” recalled Hurt. “I was at home when I played them, and I thought it was fake, but my son kept saying, ‘No, it’s real!’”

One of Hurt’s “$1,000 Frenzy” tickets matched multiple numbers with prizes adding up to a $100,000 second-tier prize in the game. The St. Louis resident was quick to share the news with her three children and claim the prize at the Lottery’s St. Louis office the same day.

“I had to tell my daughter to just get in the car. I told her it wasn’t an emergency, but I didn’t show her the ticket until we left,” said Hurt.

With her $100,000 prize, Hurt is looking forward to making bill payments, paying forward the prize to her family and possibly making a future down payment on a home.

“One day you’re wondering how you’re going to get through the next day, and then you win the Lottery,” said Hurt.
The St. Louis resident won one of 10 $100,000 prizes available in the $10 “$1,000 Frenzy” game. Introduced on Dec. 29, 2015, “$1,000 Frenzy” has more than $30 million in total prizes remaining, including two $1 million top prizes.
