Powerball Proves To Be 'Kitchen-Changing'

Every so often, Ronnie Dyer of Lee’s Summit will take a $2 chance on a life-changing prize with Powerball. Although his ticket for the Dec. 20, 2017, drawing didn’t match all five white-ball numbers and the Powerball number to win the $269 million jackpot, he did match enough numbers to win a $50,000 prize.

“This was a Quick Pick ticket,” said Dyer, who purchased two tickets from Hy-Vee Gas, 1201 SW Third St., in Lee’s Summit. “I usually play my own numbers, but I left my playslip at work.”

It wasn’t until New Year’s Day when Dyer and his wife returned to Hy-Vee Gas to buy tickets for the next drawing that he remembered to check his tickets from the previous drawing.

“I used the self-service machine, and I’m used to seeing ‘Not a winner,’ so I wasn’t sure what the message meant,” recalled Dyer. “I gave the ticket to the clerk to have him check. I buy a tea from him every morning, so we know each other. He had this strange look on his face after he scanned the ticket, so I knew something was up.”

As it turns out, Dyer’s ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers and the Powerball number drawn to win a $50,000 prize. The winning numbers were: 1, 20, 61, 64 and 69 with a Powerball number of 20.

“We were just one number off from the big one. My wife and I joked that this prize wasn’t life-changing, but it is kitchen-changing,” said Dyer, who plans to use a portion of the prize to do some remodels around his family home. “We also plan to set some aside for college tuitions. We are going to Las Vegas in a few weeks for work, so we might catch a show while we are there now, too.”

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.

With the Lottery’s new mobile app, players can create and save digital playslips for all Draw Games using their own lucky numbers or Quick Pick numbers. All digital playslips feature a unique barcode that can be scanned at retail locations in place of filling out paper playslips. Players can also use the app to check their tickets after the drawings.
