O'Fallon Office Pool Wins $50,000 Powerball Prize

A seven-year workplace tradition of pooling money for Missouri Lottery Powerball tickets is paying off for 15 employees at King Innovation in O’Fallon.

“My husband and I are in charge of collecting the money. Whichever (jackpot) is higher, that’s the one we will do Quick Picks on,” said Christine Lancaster. “This week it might be Powerball; next week might be Mega Millions.”

Lancaster explained that she and her husband will check all their tickets while buying the group’s next set of tickets.

“We’ll have a $2 winner or a $4 winner here and there,” said Lancaster, noting any small wins are rolled back into the next week’s office pool. “I checked this one, and it said, ‘Claim at Lottery.’ My husband came up and said, ‘Well, we got any winners?’ And I told him he should try it.”

Unsure about the meaning of the “Claim at Lottery” message, the Lancaster couple took the ticket to the counter at Wallis Petroleum, 102 McDonald Lane in O’Fallon, where they had originally purchased their tickets for the Sept. 27 drawing.

Upon checking the ticket, the Wallis Petroleum clerk notified them they had won a $50,000 prize.

“Man, everyone started hooting and hollering. It was great,” recalled Lancaster.

The following day, Oct. 6, Lancaster shared the news with the other King Innovation employees.

“I gathered them all in our cafeteria and told them that we won the Lottery. They said, ‘Really? Do we have enough to retire?’ I told them not exactly,” laughed Lancaster.

While not enough to outright retire, Lancaster said everyone is looking forward to using their share of the prize on expenditures they weren’t otherwise planning to make, including carpet replacement, car repairs, upgraded handbags and a new cell phone for Lancaster herself.

Each person of the 15-member group will receive $3,333 before taxes. Those winners include: Debra Albrecht of Defiance; Sandra Wiseman of Foley; Richard Dunlap of Jonesburg; Carol Horner of New Florence; Christine and James Lancaster of O’Fallon; Andrea Nicolay, Barbara Stude and Gale Tibbetts, all of St. Charles; Jackie Clark of St. Louis; Helen McKenzie and Steven Rhea, both of St. Peters; Katherine Hintze of Troy; Nancy Crigler of Wentzville; and Nathan Burns of Wildwood.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.
