$50,000 Prize is No Joking Matter for Independence Couple

A $2 investment in Missouri Lottery Powerball and an assortment of randomly selected numbers are paying off in a big way for Peter Kurtuis of Independence.

“I bought the ticket on Saturday (Sept. 9) while at the grocery store,” said Kurtuis, adding that he will typically buy Powerball and Mega Millions Quick Pick tickets while completing his weekly grocery trip at Price Chopper, 937 NE Woods Chapel Road, in Lee’s Summit.

The following morning, Kurtuis searched for the winning numbers from the Sept. 9 Powerball drawing at MOLottery.com.

“I was one number away from the big one, but I knew I must have won something big, so I went back to the store to have them check,” said Kurtuis.

An initial wave of shock swept over the Independence resident after learning he had won a $50,000 prize by matching four white-balls and the Powerball number – 6, 20, 29, 57 and 59 with a Powerball number of 22.

“I called my wife. She was traveling for work at the time,” said Kurtuis. “We don’t joke around about finances, so she immediately believed me.”

The Kurtuis couple recently completed building a retirement home in Florida, and plan to move to the “Sunshine State” sometime next year. The couple hopes to devote the prize towards the home’s finishing touches and their moving costs.

“We might use it to fill our larger closets, too,” laughed Kurtuis.

Powerball is a $2 per play multi-state Draw Game that features jackpots starting at $40 million. Powerball drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9:59 p.m. Research all current and past winning numbers at MOLottery.com.
