Fenton Bowler Strikes $100,000 Prize

A Fenton bowler who is frequently called “lucky” has another reason to keep the moniker after uncovering a $100,000 prize on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket. James Burnes, 61, said he was bowling in a league at Arnold Bowl Bar, 1140 Jeffco Blvd. in Arnold, on Sept. 2, when he bought the winning ticket.

“A guy (in line) in front of me bought two (Scratchers), so I bought two,” Burnes said.

Burnes said the two tickets were from the same $5 game, “Black and Gold,” as the tickets the man in front of him purchased. When he played the tickets a few minutes later, he discovered he had won a top prize.

“They always call me ‘lucky,’” said Burnes, who owns a construction business.

After buying a round of drinks for his bowling buddies, Burnes went home and told his wife, Doris, to “get a bottle of wine.”

“She said, ‘What’s this all about?’” he recalled. “She couldn’t believe it.”

Burnes said the couple plan to pay off a couple of bills and put some winnings in savings. They may also take a trip, possibly to England.

Introduced on Aug. 28, “Black and Gold” is a $5 Scratchers ticket that offers a “Scratch My Back” section on the back of the ticket for additional chances to win. Find official rules and remaining prize amounts for all Scratchers tickets at MOLottery.com.
