Six spots on the Missouri Lottery “Eclipse Cash” Scratchers ticket would eventually reveal a top prize worth $82,117 for one Springfield man, but he stopped scratching after uncovering only $20,000 to call his wife.

Johnny Treese exchanged a recent $5 Missouri Lottery prize for a couple more “Eclipse Cash” Scratchers tickets at his local Kum and Go.

“I scratched the bottom two numbers and saw $20,000,” Treese said. “So then I stopped scratching to call my wife and tell her I had just won $20,000.”

After the phone call with his wife, Treese decided to keep scratching the ticket. That is when he realized he had won more than just $20,000. He had won a top prize of $82,117.

“I had to call my wife again,” Treese said. “And all she said was, ‘I’ll be home in a minute.’”

Once his wife saw the winning ticket, everything started to feel real. And they decided not to tell anyone until they claimed the prize at the Lottery office in Springfield.

Treese says they don’t have any immediate plans for the money, but they do hope to do something fun as a family in the future.

“I really only play every once in a while, when the jackpots are high,” he said. “I’ve never anticipated winning anything. It is pretty crazy.”

Treese claimed the first of three top prizes on an “Eclipse Cash” Scratchers he bought Aug. 10 at Kum and Go, 1704 W. Norton Road, in Springfield.

Eclipse Cash” is a $5 Scratchers ticket introduced on July 12. This ticket celebrates the Great American Eclipse offering a top prize of $82,117 to commemorate the date: Aug. 21, 2017. Treese claimed the first of three top prizes.
