Graduating high school is usually the most exciting thing to happen to any 18-year-old, but Alec Harness of Steelville kept the excitement going with a $20,000 win.

Harness was recently on a date in Rolla with his girlfriend on July 12. After dinner, they decided to grab a Redbox movie before heading back. But his girlfriend suggested they make a quick stop for some candy at the new Break Time, 1805 N. Bishop Ave., in Rolla.

“If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t have won. She is the reason,” said Harness. “I was buying the candy, and I saw the Scratchers tickets on the counter. I never play Scratchers, but I bought two $5 games.”

Harness and his girlfriend scratched the two “20X The Cash” Scratchers tickets to find a $5 winner. They went back in for one more ticket, and after matching most of the numbers, it was time to reveal the prizes.

“I scratched up the first prize, and all I saw was a one and a comma,” said Harness. “They were all $1,000 winners and the 20X was $500. The lady in Break Time thought I was joking when I said, ‘I think I just won $20,000.’”

After Harness called his mom and grandparents to share the good news, he started making plans for his future.

“I am headed to Missouri State University for college in the fall,” he said. “I think I will use it for college, but use a little to have fun.”

20X The Cash” is a $5 game that was released on Dec. 27. It offers more than $18 million in prizes, including top prizes of $100,000.
