St. Louis Man Enjoys Million-Dollar Father's Day

Mark Weatherspoon has a regular routine when it comes to Powerball, but there was nothing routine about waking up on Father’s Day to discover he had just won $1 million.

According to Weatherspoon’s wife, Cathleen, “Mark has a Powerball ticket that he picks one ticket of numbers, and then there’s a Quick Pick on it. He plays every Wednesday and Saturday.”

After making a stop at QuikTrip, 2851 Gravois Ave. in St. Louis, for a newspaper and Mark’s usual Powerball ticket, the couple went about their day. But things would soon get a lot more interesting.

The next morning, Cathleen jotted down the latest winning numbers and gave the list to her husband.

“He goes and gets his ticket and checks them,” she said, explaining how their winning moment unfolded. “And then I hear him stomping down the stairs, and I’m like, ‘What now?’ And he goes, ‘Look. I got a good Father’s Day present.’ And I’m looking at the numbers I wrote down with the ticket, and it’s like, one… two… three… four… five… (numbers matched).”

Mark’s Quick Pick selection had matched all five white-ball numbers drawn in the June 17 Powerball drawing, an accomplishment that comes with a prize of $1 million.

“We’re all kind of excited,” Cathleen added. “He’s already talking about buying a house for our daughter.”

Plans also include “putting a lot of it away, and then maybe doing some work on our house.”

Weatherspoon’s win marks the 44th time a Missouri Lottery Powerball player has won a $1 million Match 5 prize. The winning number combination for June 17 was 10, 13, 32, 53, 62, and the Powerball number was 21.

This Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $106 million.
