Within the span of just 10 days, two Powerball tickets worth $50,000 were purchased at separate Casey’s General Stores in Joplin. The latest belongs to Cherri Martin, who bought her winning ticket at 3950 E. 20th Street for the June 10 drawing. The ticket matched four of the five white-ball numbers drawn, plus the Powerball number, to win the $50,000 prize.

Martin, a Joplin resident and grandmother raising two of her grandchildren, was shocked when the store clerk told her she had won the next day.

“On Sunday morning, I ran up to Casey’s to get a bag of ice, and I thought, ‘I’ll just take my ticket with me when I go,’” Martin explained. “I didn’t know I had won. So when she ran the thing, she’s like, ‘Oh, you’re a winner,’ and I thought maybe $20 or $40. She said, ‘$50,000,’ and I’m like, ‘Oh, my God. I can’t believe it. I’ve never won nothin’ in my life!’”

Martin’s teenage grandchildren were just as enthusiastic about the news.

“They were jumping up and down,” she shared. “They think they have the world now.”

For Martin, she’s looking forward to taking her grandkids on a small shopping spree and then making practical use of her winnings.

“I’m real excited about it,” she said. “I’m going to pay off my car, and I’m going to put a down payment on my house and buy it.”

Martin is the 103rd Missouri Lottery player to win the $50,000 “third-place” prize since Powerball’s game matrix was updated in October 2015.

On May 31, a customer at the Casey’s General Store at 2764 W. 32nd Street in Joplin also won a $50,000 Powerball prize. That prize was claimed by Debra Shumaker of Miami, Oklahoma.

In the last full fiscal year, players in Newton County won more than $6.3 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. An additional $2.2 million from Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county, and $561,000 was paid to local businesses in the form of retailer incentives.

Powerball is a multi-Lottery Draw Game played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Tonight’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $64 million, with a cash option of $40.6 million.
