Independence Woman Wakes Up to $50,000 Powerball Prize

Diane Farris had gotten up and prepared to head to work just like any other Thursday morning – except the morning of June 8 wasn’t just any Thursday. It was the morning after a Powerball drawing that left the Independence woman $50,000 richer, and within hours of waking up, she found herself on her way to a nearby Missouri Lottery office to claim her prize.

“As soon as I got up this morning, I went on my computer, and I wrote down the (winning) numbers on a piece of paper,” Farris explained. “When I got to work, I looked at my piece of paper and looked at my tickets, and I thought, ‘Whoa! These numbers are kind of matching up!’”

Farris – who bought her Quick Pick ticket at Walmart Neighborhood Market, 3411 S. Noland Road in Independence – had matched four out of five white-ball numbers, plus the Powerball number, from the June 7 drawing. Unsure of how much she’d won, she called a co-worker over to take a look.

“She said, ‘Oh, my gosh. Oh, my gosh. We’ve got to go check your tickets,’” Farris laughed. “So that’s what we did.”

After confirming the $50,000 win with the clerk at a nearby QuikTrip, Farris’ boss encouraged her to go ahead and claim her prize. She was then en route to the Lottery’s regional office in Independence, where she was still amused at the whirlwind of her morning.

“How about that?” she said. “It’s a great day.”

Farris joins a group of more than 100 Missouri Powerball players who have won the $50,000 “third-place” prize since the game’s matrix was updated in October 2015, including 15 other winners from Jackson County.

In FY16, players in Jackson County won more than $65.3 million in Missouri Lottery prizes. An additional $52.7 million from Lottery proceeds went to education programs in the county, and $6.9 million was paid to local businesses in the form of retailer incentives.

Powerball is a multi-Lottery Draw Game played in 44 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The jackpot was most recently hit in California, where a player won $447.8 million on June 10. Saturday’s Powerball jackpot is estimated at $52 million, with a cash option of $32.4 million.
