Two Bootheel Businesses Generate $7 Million in Education Funding

Calendar year 2016 proved to be yet another landmark year for two Missouri Lottery retailers in southeast Missouri. Mr. T’s Liquor Store, 510 US Highway 412 in Cardwell, and Car-Mac’s, 85 State Highway O in Steele, are being celebrated by the Lottery for their high performances last year.

“These were the two top-selling Lottery retailers in Missouri last year,” said May Scheve Reardon, executive director of the Missouri Lottery. “Though both locations had incredible sales, it’s public education that benefited the most.”

Reardon said Missouri public education received an additional $1.1 million in funding based on Lottery sales from just these two locations during 2016. For their efforts, both businesses are being welcomed into the Lottery’s 2016 Million Dollar Club – a group of 52 retailers that each sold more than $1 million in Lottery product.

“The Million Dollar Club began in 2011, and both Mr. T’s Liquor Store and Car-Mac’s have been members each year since,” said Reardon. “In the past six years alone, more than $7 million has been generated for public education based on Lottery sales from these two locations. That’s a huge achievement.”

As part of their Million Dollar Club status, both locations received a Lottery-hosted customer appreciation event on April 28. The events celebrate the individual stores’ success by awarding their customers with prizes.

“Lottery players who purchased their tickets from Mr. T’s Liquor Store and Car-Mac’s won more than $3 million in combined prizes last year, too,” said Reardon.

Since sales started in 1986, the Missouri Lottery has generated more than $5.6 billion to the state and public education programs, such as A+ Scholarships and Special Education Excess Costs.
