Missouri Lottery Scratchers players often have fun devising theories as to where big winning tickets can be found. That was the case for Lloyd Kemp of Kansas City, who won $77,777 on “7” ticket he purchased solely because of where the ticket was located in the pack.
“I usually try to hit in the middle,” Kemp shared, referring to the numbers printed on the back of each ticket. “I like between 40 and 30, and I think it was 35 I picked today.”
While no one, including Missouri Lottery employees, knows where winning Scratchers tickets are distributed, luck was on the 78-year-old’s side. He uncovered the game’s top prize while still in the parking lot of Everyday, a Conoco gas station located at 5802 E. 125th St. in Grandview.
However, Kemp still wasn’t completely sure if his theory had paid off.
“I had to look at it a second time,” he said. “I didn’t have my glasses on, so I went in and asked the cashier and he said, ‘Well, you won!’ and I said, ‘What?!’”
Kemp claimed his prize at the Lottery’s Kansas City regional office later that same day, with ideas already in mind for his winnings.
“I’ll give some to the church. And I have to give the ‘warden,’ which is my wife, some,” he teased.
A $5 game, “7” tickets officially went on sale Jan. 30. To date, more than $10 million in prizes remain, including five additional top prizes of $77,777.
