New Scratchers Ticket Proves Lucky for St. Thomas Man

In a lucky chain of events for one St. Thomas resident, a wishbone and an out-of-town work assignment may have conspired to produce a $10,000 win on a Missouri Lottery Scratchers ticket.  Marlan Schaefer, 52, presented a winning “$4 Million Spectacular” ticket at Lottery headquarters in Jefferson City, still excited to share details of his experience.

Schaefer, who works as a pipe fitter, stopped at a Phillips 66 on his way to the job site earlier in the week and won $52 on Scratchers he purchased there. When lunchtime rolled around, the crew headed to Casey’s General Store, 1401 E. 10th St. in Rolla, where he grabbed a bite to eat and cashed in his winning tickets.

“The guy there told me, ‘Try one of these new tickets,’” he explained, noting that he hadn’t originally planned to buy the $20 game.

As he scratched the ticket, he had a good feeling when ‘8’ was the first number he matched.

“They’re usually pretty lucky,” he said. “Then I scratched more numbers and was like, ‘Oh, I got another one.”

By the time Schaefer uncovered a total of 10 matching numbers, he “about flipped!”

Remembering a meal shared with his sister just days prior – when he came out on the winning end of a wishbone break – he couldn’t resist sending a photo of his lucky ticket to her with a caption that read, “The wishbone worked!”

“I was tickled,” he concluded. “I’m a loyal player, and this is just crazy.”

“$4 Million Spectacular” tickets officially went on sale March 27. More than $57.4 million in prizes remain, including two top prizes of $4 million and eight prizes of $100,000.
