Cass County Friends Split $50,000 Prize

A 10-year friendship and mutual appreciation for the Missouri Lottery has resulted in two Cass County residents splitting a $50,000 prize.

“She’ll buy some and then I’ll buy some. If she wins we will split it and vice-versa. I give her all of the ones that don’t win so she can enter them (in her My Lottery account),” explained Tammy Larcom, of Garden City, who is splitting the $50,000 prize with her friend Bethany Barta of Harrisonville.

Larcom, continued, saying that she chose to purchase a “Bonus Word Crossword” ticket from Casey’s General Store, 52 N. Highway F in Garden City, because she prefers the crossword-style tickets, while Barta prefers the bingo-style tickets.

A slight miscalculation when reading the ticket led Larcom to believe that she had won less than the $50,000 top prize.

“I was actually at my other friend’s house when I scratched it,” said Larcom. “I was scratching and couldn’t believe it. I told my friend, ‘You better check this, because, if I’m right, then it says that I just won $5,000.’”

The Garden City resident elaborated that she and her friend both counted 10 complete words on the ticket, which would have awarded a $5,000 prize.

“My son kept saying that it was 11 words and that it was going to be for $50,000,” said Larcom, who found out she actually won $50,000 after checking the ticket back at Casey’s. “I could barely get my son out of the store because he was crying so much.”

Larcom, 39, was not able to share the good news with Barta, 33, until the following day when she presented Barta with the winning ticket. Both are looking forward to paying bills with their share of the $50,000 prize.

The two Cass County friends claimed one of eight $50,000 top-prizes on the $3 “Bonus Word Crossword.” Cass County players won more than $8.9 million in Missouri Lottery prizes last fiscal year. An additional $3.6 million went to education programs in the county, and more than $1 million was paid in retailer incentives.
