Sunday Paper Delivers News of $3.5 Million Jackpot

Sunday, Feb. 12, was an otherwise standard Sunday morning for Dorothy Moore of St. Louis, complete with a Sunday newspaper. However, contained within the newspaper’s pages of news stories and coupons were the winning Missouri Lotto Draw Game numbers for the Feb. 11 drawing.

Much to her surprise, the six numbers Moore read in black and white – 6, 15, 19, 20, 26 and 38 – became full-color when she realized all six numbers matched those on her own ticket for the drawing.

“I thought I had the right numbers, but I was so excited, I had to call my sister to make sure I was reading them right,” recalled Moore.

“I just said, ‘Calm down, give me the numbers.’ And I called in to the (Lottery Winning Numbers Hotline),” said Moore’s sister, Luthresa. “I told her, ‘They check out; those are the winning numbers. You just won $3.5 million!’”

The St. Louis resident enjoys playing Scratchers games more often than she does Lotto, but she decided to take a chance with Lotto when she saw the $3.5 million jackpot. Moore used a combination of numbers from prior Draw Game tickets when choosing the numbers she wanted to play.

After getting little sleep, Moore, accompanied by her sister, brought the winning ticket to the Lottery’s St. Louis office on Feb. 14 to claim her Lotto jackpot.

Opting for the lump-sum cash option of $1.75 million, Moore admitted that the reality of the prize had yet to “soak in,” allowing her little time to ponder on what she would like to do with the newly found fortune. One altruistic endeavor was top-of-mind for the new millionaire, though.

“In the neighborhood where I live, I try to do a lot for children. I go to the school bus stops with them, and if they miss the bus, I’ll drive them to school myself. Just different things like that,” she said.

“There are a lot of kids that need winter coats and other things that I always try to provide. So I would like to do a little more for them with this,” said Moore.

Moore purchased her winning ticket from Beverly Hills Grocery & Liquor, 6714 Natural Bridge Road, in St. Louis (63121). For selling the winning jackpot ticket, Beverly Hills Grocery & Liquor received a $5,000 selling bonus.

Moore is the first Missouri Lottery-made millionaire in 2017. The previous Lotto jackpot, also worth $3.5 million, drawn on Nov. 12, 2016, remains unclaimed. That ticket was sold at Hermann Fuel Mart, 115 B Highway 19 in Hermann, and will expire on May 11, if it is not claimed. Another Lotto jackpot was won on Feb. 25. That ticket, worth $1.3 million, was sold at Signal Food Store, 402 W. Mt. Vernon St., in Nixa.

Lotto is a twice-weekly in-state Draw Game with jackpots that start at $1 million that have reached $19 million. To date, there have been 241 jackpots awarded in Lotto with an average jackpot of more than $2.9 million.
